The Parent
& Child Educational Services
Meeting
the needs of skills-challenged Individuals from birth, and
throughout the school years
The new PACES has been tailored to meet the
individual needs of persons with learning disabilities from
birth and throughout the school years. It revolves around
the child, his immediate family and carers. Thus it addresses
the needs of the individual in the Family setting, in the
school and in the community keeping in mind the child’s
future.
These services will be offered to clients both in Malta and in Gozo
As individuals pass through the stages of infancy,
childhood and adolescence their needs change. Support is required
in all areas
of development and in all aspects of living skills.
Early Intervention
Basic Infant Stimulation plus support to our families is given
during the first years of life. It is delivered in the home
and it introduces the family to the different therapies as
required to ensure that the child is supported holistically.
Kinder Plus
During Kindergarten years, the above support is extended to
Playgroups / Kindergarten classes. The children are now exposed
to participating in activities within the Community, without
the continuous support of their immediate family.
Pre-Teens
Once the children move to Mainstream schools, support is offered
to the teacher, the facilitator and the peers. This helps
the child, adjust to a structured classroom environment. Support
at this time is more intensive. It aims to help the child,
generalize skills taught during the previous years and cope
with the challenge of being in the normal setting.
Teens
As the child moves from Primary to Secondary School, the needs
of the individual change. While maintaining a weekly home
support service, the Programme now also seeks to help the
individual come to terms with the needs and difficulties encountered
by all individuals of that age and especially with the challenges
due to his disability. Skills required now, include life skills,
sex education and an introduction to participate in leisure,
social and cultural activities within the community. The child
also needs to come to terms with his disability and its family
now needs maximum assistance to help the individual acquire
skills which ensure his / her independence to the best of
his / her ability.
